Community vs. Commodity
The above title can be better defined as
Competitive vs. Collaborative
Talk vs. Participate
Order vs. Chaos
Commodity is cheap, simple and far reaching where as Community is inexpensive, complex and slow growing
Commodity only has one winner where as In Community everyone benefits.
If you want to be a community rather than a commodity the Community is certainly not a buzz word. Building a community takes
- A lot of time and patience
- Requires commitment and honesty
- One will have stop out going messages and start listening to incoming messages
Here are some tips that will help you build a community
- Find ways to increase “win” for your customers
- Create open communication between your customers…try and make them participate
- Reward your customers
Just remember this “To Be Extraordinary, the first step is stop being Ordinary“

Community certainly wins over commodity but community demands more power and share.
Well explained. The main thing in community is power. Its a platform for many people’s participation, recommendation; ultimately it will help you to decide.
Not sure about a commodity (i wonder why i dont like economics, sshhhhh!), a community does give you satisfaction when its active… i can say this from my association with a community based website. A community not only gives you a chance to get your queries solved but it also provides people a knowledge sharing platform and if people get rewarded for their efforts it acts as an icing on the cake. All in all patience is “the” key word in making a successful community.
