Transfer your Putty Settings

Putty is one the first applications I install on my computer, and I have been using it for quite some time.

I have installed it in many computers, but one complaint I always had was isn’t there are configration file which can be backed up and be used while changing computers.. getting to do all the settings was quite a boring and time taking job.

But now I have found the solution. Moving putty settings is an easy task once you what is involved.

Here’s a guide which will help you

Putty stores all its registry in windows registry, so to save a backup file of your putty settings you need to export this registry key.

1. Click on start > RUN and type regedt32 and then click on OK

2. Once you press OK, you will see a application something like this

3. Now press ctrl+F to open the find box, search for SimonTatham. Make sure you only select Keys in the look at section in the find box.

4. Once the search is complete we will see the key name. (the search nay take some time as our windows registry is quite large)

5. Click File > Export. and save this file at the chosen location. Give your file an appropriate name like putty.reg

Thats it we are done!!! This putty.reg file is considerably safe as it does not have any passwords or the actual SSH details.
