What is Web 2.0?

Kevin Maney says “Web 2.0 seems to be like Pink Floyd lyrics: It can mean different things to different people, depending upon your state of mind”

Introduction
The concept of Web 2.0 began in a brainstorming session between O’Reilly and MediaLive International in 2004.

The phrase Web 2.0 hints at an improved form of World Wide Web.

It consists tools that enable a user to Blog, Tag, Comment, Modify, Rank, etc.

The more explanatory synonym for this “Participatory Web”

Principles of Web 2.0

  • No Products, Only Services
  • Not what customer wants but why they want
  • A problem solving approach
  • Simple Solutions

Customization

  • Every Individual is Unique
  • Allow him/her to choose instead of forcing him to use what you have made.
  • Make him feel at home
  • Eg.
    Myspace, Google Homepage, My Yahoo

Try to reach out for the whole web. Focus on the long tail also and not just the head.

Promotion
User Network is the key to market dominance in Web 2.0 era. Users add value.

Eg.

Amazon, Ebay – Users Reviews, Similar Items, Most Popular
Wikipedia – Content can be created or edited by anyone on the web

So far so good. Summing it all up

No Products, Only Services
Make your users feel at home
Users add Value

Whats Next!!

Web 3.0 is something called the Semantic Web, a term coined by Tim Berners-Lee, the man who invented the (first) World Wide Web. In essence, the Semantic Web is a place where machines can read Web pages much as we humans read them, a place where search engines and software agents can better troll the Net and find what we’re looking for. “It’s a set of standards that turns the Web into one big database,” says, CEO of Radar Networks, one of the leading voices of this new-age Internet.

Tim Berners-Lee terms Web 3.0 as Semantic Web. By Semantic Web they mean web is a place where machines can read a webpage much like humans, where search engine bots can crawl the net in a better way and find exactly what we are looking for.
